Paper Masterpieces By Cologne Artist

Cologne artist Simon Schubert starts his creation process literally "from scratch", moreover, a clean sheet is the only material of his paintings. With the help of the plasticity of ordinary paper, by painstaking bending, folding and pressing the sheet, expressive bas-relief paintings are born:

See how accurate all the lines are, there is even a shadow from the window!

The works balance between two and three dimensional worlds. The whole secret is in lighting: the effect of a three-dimensional interior is obtained due to the correct arrangement of light and shadow.

With the right lighting, we get an unexpected view of houses with coffered ceilings, long corridors, staircases, and hallways with huge mirrors.

The colorlessness of transparent rooms allows the viewer to be alone with their subconscious.

When creating his relief paper installations, Simon Schubert, whose work was greatly influenced by Samuel Beckett, raises such age-old themes as loneliness, isolation, solitude, and loss.

Interiors are the most favorite subject of Simon's paintings, but not the only one. The author also depicts people's faces:

Simon Schubert holds his exhibition of works in a huge room, where the walls and ceiling are completely covered with paper drawings and relief panels. Inside, there are strange little black statues that contrast with the snow-white canvases, thereby making the drawing-relief more expressive:

Yes, you were not mistaken, the sculptures in the rooms are covered with hair and this is another type of his work. Simon is a great master of unusual, or rather, strange sculptures. But this can already be developed in the next topic.

In 2008, Simon Schubert was awarded the Phoenix-ZYAB Art Prize.

His work is truly masterly and is considered one of the most expensive blank sheets of paper in the world, costing thousands of pounds!
