Today we are going to sew a "Maple Leaf". By the way, there are a great many variants of this classic block. I propose one of the most ordinary variants. I choose for this project the most beautiful scraps in stock, and the brighter and more diverse they are – the better. And you can sew the leaves of cotton batik to repeat the incredible transitions of colors that we meet in nature in the fall.
Tailoring
In order to sew one block, you will need the following parts:
- 4 squares of background fabric size 2”;
- 2 squares of background fabric size 2 3/8”;
- 3 rectangles of colored fabric size 2 X 3.5”;
- 1 square of colored fabric size 2 3/8”;
- a strip of colored cloth for the shank size 3/4”X 3 (or 3.5").
Sewing
Take three 2 " squares of background fabric and draw diagonal lines. Apply to the rectangles of colored cloth as shown. Warning! The squares on the two rectangles should be the same (the direction of the diagonal line — down to the right), and on the third — in the other direction (the direction of the diagonal line — down to the left). Lay a line strictly on the drawn line.
Cut unnecessary at a distance of 1/4 " from the stitch.
Expand the resulting parts. If necessary, trim with a ruler. The size of each part is 2 X 3.5”.
Take two squares of colored and background fabric size 2 3/8". On light tissue draw diagonal line, lay shape on distance 1 / 4” right and from left from this lines.
Cut along the line, open the part. We got two parts – a square of two triangles (HST). Trim each square to a size of 2".
Sew the stalk of a leaf. Take the remaining 2 3/8 " square of background fabric, cut it diagonally, and sew in a ¾ X 3”piece. The detail is narrow, take your time, proceed carefully.
Trim the resulting part to size 2". In this case, try to guide in 45 degrees on the ruler passed in the middle of the color strip.
Assemblying of the block
Arrange all the parts as shown in the picture and sew in rows. The size of the resulting block is 5".
