Evening Ensemble of Black Velvet with Chain-Stitch Embroidery: France, 1888-89

We present you a wonderful evening ensemble, France, 1888-89. A. Felix Brevete 15 Faub. Saint-Honoré Paris, Augusta Auctions.
The outfit is made of velvet, decorated with tambour embroidery with silk and beading. It is a long dress and a bonnet.
Long narrow long dress with a rectangular neckline with pleats, gathered on the front. Turn-down collar is located at the back, it is like a wide belt, decorated with charming beading. The sleeves are long and narrow, raised on the shoulders. The back has a small train.

The outfit is decorated with silk tambour embroidery in the form of roses of different sizes. We see symmetry in the arrangement of roses on the back of the dress. Many roses with twigs of small size and similar in appearance scattered throughout the outfit, they are located up the flower, then down.

At the bottom of the skirt there is a border of roses, and just above a few large flowers are located around the perimeter. Border of roses decorate the edges of the sleeves as well.

The gown is cmplemented by a hood (bonnet) of the same fabric. It is also decorated with an embroidered pattern: the flower is made of tambour embroidery and beaded patterns.

The ensemble belonged to Elizabeth Stockbridge, a Senator's wife. In this outfit, Elizabeth attended the inauguration of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States, on March 4, 1889.
So, lush velvet and embroidery became symbols of prosperity, flowers in spring, hope and new growth, and the whole look makes sense for a politician's wife.
