Wedding Embroidered Scarf from Hermitage Collection

Tatiana Nikodimovna Kosourova, head of the sector of decorative and applied art of the Department of Western European Art in the Hermitage, talks about embroidery on women's clothes in the late 18th century.
During the online tour of the "Caretaker" eposide, which took place in the Hermitage, the 18th century outfits from the museum's storerooms were demonstrated. Including a magnificent wedding scarf from France, made of silver glazet with embroidery of floral ornament. At the edges it is decorated with metal gold lace.
The basis for this scarf was a skirt of a grandmother dress. It was carefully cut off, and two identical pieces were sewn in the middle to make the scarf. Thus, the fabric and embroidery on the scarf are of the late 18th century, and the scarf was at the wedding in the 19th century.
The embroidery of the pattern on the scarf was carried out with untwisted silk. This material gives a more rough texture and mutes the shine of the fabric. The pattern was executed with chain stitches and needlepointing. In addition to the threads sequins, metal plaques and corrugated stripe of metal foil were used. This embroidery is quite heavy.

We see that the thing is old, was in use and needs restoration as places are wiped and there are not enough metal plaques.

Admire the details and watch the tour.
