Weightless Sculptures by Mariko Kusumoto

Today I want to introduce you the artist Mariko Kusumoto, creating extraordinary ephemeral jewellery.

Mariko, a Japanese woman, now lives and works in Massachusetts, the USA. Her works can be seen in the permanent collections of the Boston Musum of Fine Arts, the Swiss National Museum, the Racine Art Museum, the Mobilia Gallery in Cambridge.

The artist creates her aerial sculptures and accessories from the finest polyester chiffon, heating it to the desired temperature and allowing the material to "remember" the necessary shape. These works are then transformed into intricate sculptures or 3D jewellery — brooches, rings, necklaces and bracelets. These jewels are light, flexible and durable at the same time.

The source of inspiration for Mariko is her own imagination, nature, artistically interpreted in surreal images. Some of the figures resemble creatures from sea depths, flowers in luxurious flower beds. Another works are not that simple, and make the audience have an interesting self talk.

The artist herself describes her work as "funny and elegant, giving the joy of discovery and surprise."

Below are some examples of Mariko Kusumoto's work.
