Pizza Couture: Culinary Masterpieces on Pizza

Creativity can turn even such a trivial thing as pizza into a piece of art. Though, why trivial? Perfect shape, juicy palette are a wide scope for inspiration. If the case a real artist starts working, caught in the kitchen by chance, the result is amazing.

The founder of such an unusual genre as Pizza Couture — the art of creating paintings on pizza — is considered Domenico Crolla, an Italian by origin, living in Scottish Glasgow. There he owns a local restaurant Bella Napoli, working as a chef.

From the many pizzerias this restaurant differs by that here on your pizza instead of sliced tomatoes and greens you can suddenly have a portrait of a famous movie star or the President himself. As a canvas, the chef uses Margarita pizza, so all the works are in red and yellow delicious colours with a splash of spice. His pizza-portraits got a lot of famous people: Elizabeth II, Barack Obama, Rihanna, Beyonce, Madonna and so on. Vladimir Putin also got on this tomato-mozzarella canvas. The artist began his culinary career with a portrait of Bruce Lee.

In fact, Domenico does not sell such pizzas, he makes them only because of inspiration and exclusively for himself, refusing orders for exclusive work. Only if you are very lucky, he would let you try some fresh "picture".

Each pizza picture takes about two hours. When creating a portrait, the chef uses a scalpel, cutting extra from the top layer of cheese. The biggest difficulty in creating such a masterpiece is that the portrait is not blurred when baking, because the cheese melts. But the cunning cook managed to solve it (though it is not known how, it is a culinary secret).

According to him, the simplest picture is Tom Ford's face, because he has perfect skin, no wrinkles and bags under his eyes.

Actually, Pizza Couture project is not the only merit of Domenico Crolla. Once he cooked one of the most expensive pizzas in the world. The diameter of that unique dish called "Royale 007" was 30 cm, and as a filling there were special ingredients: lobster soaked in cognac, caviar, Scottish smoked salmon, tomato sauce, venison medallions, balsamic vinegar, prosciutto (Italian ham made from ham, grated with salt). In addition, on top the pizza was decorated with flakes of edible food gold weighing 24 carats. The pizza was served with a famous cocktail "agent 007", a recipe that he came up with in the film "Casino Royale". The precious dish was sold at auction for 4.2 thousand dollars.

However, Domenico Crolla is not the only one who is engaged in such food art. Something similar is created by Italian Matteo Su. Inspired by photos of celebrities of all time, Matteo deftly mixes tomato sauce with cheese to create an amazing portrait on pizza. The works of this artist look skillful, clear, and most importantly... yummy!

Here is another representative of the unusual Pizza Couture project, or rather a representative — British artist Prudence Staite. For several years she has been creating sculptures and paintings of various food from chocolate to salami, including portraits of celebrities from pizza ingredients. Firstly, she makes a sketch with tomato puree, and then fills the picture with edible details. For creativity, the artist uses only those combinations that any pizzeria offers.

The only drawback of a designer pizza — it is a pity to eat it! But, as they say, nothing lasts forever.
