Evening Gown by Jeanne Lanvin

This wonderful evening gown by Jeanne Lanvin was presented at the exhibition "Elegance and Splendour of Art Deco. Kyoto Costume Institute, Jewellery Houses Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels" at Moscow Kremlin Museums, September 30, 2016 — January 11, 2017.

The dress dates back to the early 1920s, has straight silhouette in the style of a la garconne by Jeanne Lanvin. Jeanne Lanvin (Fr. Jeanne-Marie Lanvin, January 1, 1867, Paris, France — July 6, 1946), was a French fashion designer, founder of her own Haute couture house. Jeanne Lanvin opened her own tailoring studio in 1889 in Paris, at Rue Boissy-d-Anglais, house No. 16. She became famous in the early 20th century because of creating elegant clothes for young mothers and their young daughters.

The length of the dress in Art Deco style, unlike the dresses of the 18th century, which went to the floor, was knee-deep or slightly longer. The style was called Robe de Style.

Let us study the outfit and its details!

The outfit is stylized as a court gown of the 18th century, it is fitted with a narrow bodice, but has a small hoop-skirt.

The outfit is complemented by a simulated jewellery in the form of a pendant on the bodice. In those days, jewellery were pendants and brush.

The bottom of the dress is decorated with black Chantilly lace. These laces were first made by hand, but at the end of the 19th century they were made by machine.

The outfit is decorated with beading, sequins and rhinestones. Elements of embroidery on the bodice depict starry sky, and the hem of the skirt copies elements of the Aztec calendar.
