«Smoke and Mirrors» Project: Harry Potter Universe by Melbourne School of Design

Students of the Melbourne School of Design received an unusual task: it was necessary to design eight objects from the Harry Potter universe and create their models. As guiding vectors, students received quotes from the book and hypothetical information about customers. According to the course leader, it was similar to the situation when customers come to you with a selection of inspiring photos or ideas, and you have to satisfy their requests without copying any of them. It was necessary to consider the peculiarities of interaction of the characters with the objects, for example, the main staircase of Hogwarts looks dark and endless, like a freshman saw it for the first time.

The project was called "Smoke and Mirrors". The most difficult was to stay in time limit: they had 11 days, and it was necessary to have time not only to come up with everything, but also to make all the houses and rooms of cardboard. In total, 400 hours were spent on laser cutting, and 700 boxes for magic wands were collected for Ollivander's shop. According to the task, the objects had to look really magical, but it was possible to use only brown cardboard — "it's so difficult, and therefore more interesting", commented the heads of the project on this restriction in the materials.
