Surreal animals by Wang Ruilin

Wang Ruilin is a sculptor from Beijing, China. To some extent, he can be called an animalist and fiction artist. Most of his works show the beauty of animals, the beauty and unpredictability of nature. He creates representatives of animal world in a special manner, which can be called surreal.

Copper beings, fictional and similar to realistic, bear on their backs and horns, a small "cube" of our planet: mountain ranges, rivers, lake, grasslands and field. After a detailed examination of the illusion, a viewer understands that those are not animals that we know. They are prototypes of the three whales or elephants, in each religion has its revered animal, who hold our planet on their backs.

Wang Ruilin`s sculptures are the result of Eastern classical painting and modern images and techniques.

What can his works mean and why are they so distorted? Wang Ruilin depicts not the face of an animal, its beauty or grace, but its symbol in nature and its symbol in the understanding of a human. It is a stylized, almost decorative surrealism that expresses the image of an animal or even its inner world. The Chinese sculptor tries to express something more than just similarity in his art. He is interested in the depth of understanding, philosophical reflection, hidden meaning.

The series called "Dreams" includes amazing figures, made almost in life-size, - bent in singing crocodile, magnificent horses, thoughtful fish, graceful fallow deer with smooth or textured surfaces of bodies, but always with carefully crafted details.

The sculptor is strongly influenced by traditional Chinese art, he got familiar with it when a child.

A 4-year old Wang saw the ink drawings by Xu Bahuna, who united traditional and European art in his painting. "I was impressed by these inky strokes, expressive and energetic. Perhaps, my attention to horses began with that moment."

Surrealism, like many other genres of contemporary art, has no unambiguous interpretations. Of course, the artist himself laid a certain meaning in one or another of creation, but the very presentation is conducive to the fact that everyone can see in such art something of his/her own, to see special images and memories in his/her head. This is the role of art - to make a person think, to move away from the usual clichés, to learn to see the meaning in the surrounding things and phenomena.
