Kalocsa: Floral Folk Embroidery, Painting in Hungary

It seems to me that this is what spring mood looks like: bright colors of flowers intertwine in intricate patterns. Hungarian Kalocsa is atmospheric, intimate, soulful — seeing it once, having studied the weave patterns, you will always remember this floral script and always find Kalocsa among other embroideries and paintings.

You can see Kalocsa in Hungary on anything! It is always hand-painted and hand-embroidered. Most often these floral folk motifs appear on clothes and home textiles.

In modern clothes there is a place for local folklore as well...

Look at this crockery (it is always painted by hand)...

The biggest fans of Hungarian folklore decorate their houses inside and outside with Kalocsa!

Red peppers are one of the main elements of this style, they grow in the region. I addition to them there are also flowers, they can be different, but the bright colors and flowing lines — one of the important rules in Kalocsa.

This branch of art has become a unique element of peasant Kalocsa culture (Kalocsai Sárköz region) and of other villages: Drohsel, Homemade, Regsort, Shakmar and Jitelek, which were founded in the 18-19 centuries. Colorful floral motifs of decorative painting and embroidery of Kalocsa are known throughout the world and are often considered a symbol of Hungarian folk art.

The women of Kalocsa, who still paint and embroider in traditional style, are the bearers and keepers of the local heritage. There are also traditional revival groups, folk dance groups, a local museum and a folk art centre — they contribute to the preservation of the characteristic culture and folk art that distinguish the identity of Kalocsa. The inhabitants of the surrounding settlements are devoted to their national heritage.

Summer village festivals are held, such as the Kalocsa Paprika Festival, and folklore, where everything is dazzling because of the bright folk costumes of women.
