Make ''Shabby Chic'' Sign Plate

A detailed tutorial on shabby chic plate (or "black and white vintage", or "monochrome vintage", or "French vintage"). I will show how to make an excellent basis for further decoration, decoupage and so on. Very detailed, step by step, for beginners. Let`s begin?

So, we want to make a small plate in the style of monochrome vintage. It will be white, with black scuffs and protruding rim-contour.

Firstly, we need the plate itself. (Who has it, may skip several steps).

Draw on the plywood or make a template and contour. Cut it out of polished plywood (for a small size fits 6 mm thick plate).

We use an electric jigsaw (a saw for a tree, narrow, with small and frequent teeth), a screwdriver with a thick drill (or drill) and a grinder.

For the convenience of cutting, drill holes with a screwdriver close to the inner corners of the plate.

Don't worry! Cutting is pretty easy, and curves are easier to cut than even surface. Keep the tool strong, confident, no hurry, but don't stand in one place. And remember about safety! (protective glasses, keep fingers away from the moving saw).

After sanding machine, do not forget about the ends. Smooth with sandpaper (grain 150-180).

Despite all the efforts, you can often see defects on the cut-out details: "chips", the torn-out fragments of plywood, wood fibers and emptiness on edges (fault in gluing of plywood layers).

Work with the defects: apply decoupage glue or PVA glue (for better adhesion of subsequent).

Since the bottom layer is black, we make black putty: mix construction putty for wood (or structural paste) with black acrylic soil. And putty defects.

After drying (drying time = the time of curing of the filler specified in the instruction) hide all the irregularities.

Paint the plate with black acrylic soil. I use a piece of a foam sponge.

Rub the ground in the plywood. If you don't want to get your fingers dirty, wear rubber gloves.

Or use a brush.

Dry the plate. Attention! At the first steps, try not to dry the layers with a hairdryer, dry the plate on a battery. Everything has to dry completely at room temperature. You do not need much to wet the plywood, diluting the paint. Otherwise, it will be deformed during drying.

Grind and apply the soil again. With a brush, or a roller.

Again, dry and grind.

Now let's make the protruding contour.

Apply paper construction tape around the perimeter of the plate.

Mark the contour lines and cut with a stationery knife under the ruler.

Remove the inner strip of tape.

Apply the same paste, which we sealed the defects on the plate, using a rubber spatula.

Try to make a layer of the same thickness.

Prepare the garbage bag: open and keep it near you — you will need it! Immediately, without waiting for drying, remove the tape (preferably in gloves, so as not to get your hands dirty. And add the soiled strips of tape in the package).

Wait for the paste to dry (it is better to leave it overnight). Grind. Remove the dust. (You can just rinse under the tap.)

Cover the plate with varnish.

Rub the wax (ordinary candle). We pass on the protruding faces (where the scuffs will seem natural) and in some places on the plate is chaotic.

The grains of the candles looked like a wide brush (handy — bristle).

Paint the plate in the main color, white. Apply the paint (or white water enamel) with a sponge, brush, roller.

If the surface shines through, paint in two layers (naturally, with intermediate drying).

Smooth the protruding parts of the plate with sandpaper, removing white paint (from the wax-treated parts it comes off quite easily). The lower black layer will be exposed.

Make the scuffs softer, not so sharp.

Regular sponge for washing the dishes, wetted, and a three-plate rigid "green" part, taking the part of white paint.

Wipe the plate from paint leftouts.

That`s all, the plate is ready.

You can decorate it further: paint, decoupage, use stencils.

Enjoy the creative process!
