Toys in Primed Textile Technique

I am sure that many of you have already heard such an expression as primed textile? But not everyone knows what it is and where it is used.

The technique of primed textile is used to create toys and dolls.

A ready toy is impregnated with a solution of PVA glue or acrylic primer. After drying, the toy is painted with acrylic or oil paints.

So, the principle is as in canvas priming. The primer creates a smooth surface, filling the pores of the fabric. The paint is applied flatly, decreasing its consumption.

After priming, the toy gets more rigid, which is important to maintain its shape.

Usually, the toys are painted with acrylic paints. A small-size toy may not be pre-primed with PVA glue or acrylic solution, it is enough to apply 1-2 coats of paint.

The finished toy can be varnished.

Primed textile combines well with ceramics, papier-mâché and traditional textile toys technique.
