Plein-air Idea: Inspired by the Landscapes of the Great, the Artist Hank Schmidt In Der Beek Captures the Patterns of His Shirt on Canvas

Once the artist Hank Schmidt in der Beek together with his friend and photographer Fabian Schubert went on a journey to the places where great artists created — Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne. This is the famous "pilgrimage" route, many painters try to feel their favorite artists and try their own strength, going to plein-air in the atmosphere of famous landscapes. But when Hank saw one of these landscapes in reality, he saw how vast the mountains were and how small his canva was. Then he decided to draw on this canvas the thing that seemed to him closer and clearer — his shirt.

Perhaps this is just a beautiful legend, and the project was made up by friends in advance. In any case, it turned out to be an incredibly witty series of pictures. Critics are delighted with this combination of landscape and a kind of portrait, something big and something common and very personal. At the end of their project, the co-authors published a book "And in the Summer I do Paint" that presents both photographs of the artist at work and the resulting paintings. By the way, Hank's shirts, sweaters and cardigans are often really spectacular!

And here are some turns of the photobook:
