DIY: a Vintage Handbag

How to quickly make a beauty with your hands!

This DIY will help you to make an evening bag in vintage style without having any experience in wet felting.

To make this bag you will need:

  • 30-50 g of merino wool 19 um;
  • fleece of merino/alpaca or any other of fine-wool breeds (20 g);
  • hardware (a sew-on clasp, 15-20 cm);
  • bubble wrap, 2 pieces — 50x50;
  • a rolling pin;
  • dressmaking scissors;
  • a pen;
  • a ruler;
  • a lead pencil;
  • paper for patterns;
  • a calculator;
  • a needle;
  • strong thread for sewing bags;
  • water;
  • a container for water;
  • a ruler for felting;
  • soap solution;
  • a vibrogrinding machine;
  • a towel;
  • base for laminated flooring with a width of 2 mm;
  • a washboard.

There is 40% shrinkage which must be taken in consideration when making patterns.

Width/height X 40%: 2 = increase.

In the example, the increase was 7 cm (40%): 2 cm = 3.5 cm.

The layout was made in the following areas:

1 layer of combed tape (along);

1 layer of combed tape (across);

3 layers of fleece (chaotic).

The whole process of felting involves a very gentle friction.

The fleece can be replaced with fibers of silk, cotton, viscose.

Start attaching the clasp from the middle of the bag.

I hope that this DIY will be useful to you.

I wish you creative inspiration and all the best!
