A success story: Brunello Cucinelli — a cashmere king

The history of this luxury brand starts in 1978 when Brunello Cucinelli, a guy from a poor Italian family — gave up training at the university and opened a mini-production of knitwear of high quality cashmere.

The future king of cashmere, as they call Brunello Cucinelli, was born in Italy and spent his youth on a farm. His father worked on a farm, his mother was a seamstress. Brunello learned well what hard physical labor was.

At the age of 19 he enrolled to study at a university to become an engineer, but after 3 years he dropped out of it and opened his own production in 40 square metres. He invested his small capital in the production of cashmere.

  • Cashmere is a very thin and soft, but warm fabric woven from the wool of Kashmir goats. The largest suppliers of cashmere down are India, Nepal, China, Pakistan, Mongolia.

High-quality cashmere thread has a thickness of 15-20 microns, and, for comparison, a human hair is 50-75 microns!

In the 80s cashmere was exclusively "masculine" fabric, but Cucinelli made the opposite: he made a collection of women's cashmere sweaters, which were immediately sold out. All first collections were exported to Europe and they also were in great demand.

In 1987 Cucinelli bought a medieval castle in the small town of Solomeo in Italy, there is the company's head office and production now. The next 20 years, Brunello Cucinelli had been developing his business and achieved an incredible success, releasing only the men's and women's cashmere sweaters.
