Glass Bay: Garbage Beauty in the Far East

Garbage...

Since mankind became aware of this problem, the best minds have been working on the problem of waste recycling.

But before... before, we just threw out the garbage, not caring about where it was going, and what would happen to it.

Hence, there are infinite dumps near cities.

But nature is wiser than us. With its own powers it tries at least to partially correct the problem, if not to save the planet from the mountains of waste.

You've probably heard about California's glass beach.

Did you know that in our country, in the Far East, there is such a miracle.

It is located near the largest beach of the Vladivostok — Shamora Bay. It is called Glass Bay.

The shore of the Bay is 90% covered with broken glass. It is believed that near this place there used to be the "Ermine" garbage dump, used glass bottles and broken china were put there, much of the waste fell into the sea and the beach became simply dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. For a couple of decades waves carefully washed shards, turning them into smooth multi-colored pebbles, and the beach now looks like a kaleidoscope.

Over time, the landfill was reclaimed, the place became a regular green mountain and didn't look like an old dump. On the eve of the APEC 2012 summit, the territory was refined and turned into a recreational zone. Now the beach of the bay is a landmark of the city, and now you can safely go to rest in nearby bays.

Today Glass Bay is a good place for rest. The beach is clean, it is cleaned regularly. The beach has all necessary facilities: a shower, a toilet, sports and children's playgrounds, there are lodges, summer houses, places for tents. The beach has a lifeguard and a paramedic (at least the inscription at the entrance to the beach says that).

Glass Bay is quite a cozy place that is closed on both sides with cliffs, the sand on the beach is of an unusual dark color, but the sand closer to the water has pebbles and glass. It is not dangerous to walk barefoot on the beach because the sea has polished the broken glass with its waves and now there is a beautiful unusual beach.

On both sides of the beach there are beautiful rocks, and the left side of the beach boasts with views on sliding rocks, which are tilted away to the sea.

But for us, the artisans, the special value of this place is in its countless "treasures", small colorful pieces of glass that are not only pleasing the eye, but give a lot of ideas for creativity.

If we dig and try to find a beautiful piece of glass on a usual beach, here you will have to spend a lot of time to find an ordinary stone.

70% of the "sand" of the beach is glass. Basically, the glass has green and white color. But there is also blue, brown and even pink glass.

20% are stones of the remains of bricks, tiles, ceramics... but the rest is real stones and shells.

What used to be bricks, now looks like this

For example, a piece of an old tile. Ready "crackle".

And these are fragments of broken pottery or remains of tiles.

And even sun-bleached colors look great, like fragments of Roman mosaics

Washed by the sea, all these glass-ceramic remains settled on the beach, as if waiting in the wings.

But once they are in the hands of an artisan, they can find a second life, turning into beautiful jewelry.

And yet nature can make wonders!
