Scented Bags of 16-17 Centuries

I want to show you this interesting and practical accessory, "sweet bags" or scented bags. These handbags were not only an optional accessory, but also a necessary thing in the life of rich people of 16-17 centuries.

As you know, the clothes of 16-17 centuries was distinct in its splendor, they were made of rich brocade, velvet, cloth and richly decorated with precious stones, golden embroidery, pearls, lace. The fabric was very dense to withstand the weight of the trim, so the outfit was very cumbersome. It was impossible to clean such clothes.

After returning home the dress was put in a chest with aromatic herbs to repel unpleasant odors. When it was time to put on the dress again, its was complemented by accessories — bags with a mix of herbs that were also embroidered and decorated. Soon they turned into a stunning beauty purse with embroidery, which were fixed to a belt with the help of chains or braided cords.

Let's look at these bags in detail. They were made of various fabrics like silk, velvet, brocade. They were embroidered with gold and stones, beads and pearls, damask and decorative stitches— chains, spirals, burls. Embroidery motifs were natural: flowers, birds or ornamental motifs.

This selection presents one of the classic designs and kinds of decoration of scented handbags. The top of the purse was cinched with a drawstring. The edges of scented bags were usually decorated with woven pear-shaped elements with large tassels. A few smaller tassels were put at the bottom of the purse.
