Create Autumn Patchwork Woods Without a Needle

Materials and tools:

  • brown, green, olive, red, beige stretching velvet
  • white, yellow, orange, Burgundy, red, grey, green, blue, beige silk
  • double-sided fusible webbing
  • adhesive spray
  • Titan wild glue
  • foam board
  • MDF
  • scissors
  • fabric paint
  • designer knife
  • nail file or a knife with a nicked blade
  • fabric paint

Preparing the base

Dimensions: width — 43 cm, height — 57 cm

Glue the MDF and the foam board to each other with the Titan glue:

Prepare the sketch

My sketch was 35 by 48.5 cm.

Leave some space for the mat. Glue the sketch to the base. The second sketch is fixed on the webbing:

Cut through all lines of the sketch with the designer knife through the base at about 3-4 mm.

Tip: when cutting the lines, hold the tool perpendicular:

The work

Think over the combinations of fabrics.

Tip: the best way to get the desired shade of a fabric is to paint it.

The trunks and branches of trees will be velvet, the rest will be silk. Use such tools to help you, the blades should be dull:

Let's start with the foliage. Combine a piece of fabric and the relevant piece of sketch glued to the webbing:

Fix them in the surface this way:


Add blue fabric from time to time to show the sky through the gaps of branches:

Tip: To give the foliage more shades, you can use the technique of double overlay of fabric:

For foliage at the bottom:

The space between the trunks is filled with grey and green colors.



To show the ground, use at least fifteen muted colours and shades of silk matching the colours of the foliage. Use warm shades for the foreground, cold — for the background:

Paint the trunks and branches with velvet:
