A Simple Tutorial on Decorating a Provence Tray

I do love the Provence style and me, Tatiana Olkhovikova, decided to create with you a beautiful tray to decorate a kitchen or countryside house.

You need:

  • wooden tray
  • acrylic primer
  • sanding sponge
  • different brushes
  • cloth or paper towel
  • structural pasta
  • decoupage card
  • transparent file
  • spraying bottle
  • varnishing glue
  • pressure roller or spatula
  • bowl for water
  • construction KIVA varnish
  • patina
  • old brush
  • disposable gloves
  • RedFox car lacquer
  • soft wax

1. Surface preparation

1.1. Slightly sand the tray and remove the dust.

1.2. Coat obvious cracks.
1.3. Sand the cracks and the handle.

1.4. Cover with acrylic primer using the sponge or brush.
1.5. Sand the surface with the sponge.

2. Creating a texture

2.1. Take a stencil.
2.2. If needed, cover all extra items with the masking tape.

2.3. Place the stencil in the middle.
2.4. Apply the structural paste.

2.4. Vertically (!) remove the stencil.

2.5. Dry and apply a damp cloth to smooth it.

2.6. Dry and paint the tray using a cream color.

2.7. Dry, sand, remove dust and paint the tray with the second layer.

3. Decoupage

3.1. Cut out the main motive out of the decoupage card.

3.2. Put the cut piece on the file face down.
3.3. Sprinkle the paper and leave it to soak for 1-2 minutes.

3.4. Pour out the water excess from the paper surface.
3.5. Remove excess moisture with the paper towels.

3.6. Coat the paper and the tray with the decoupage varnish glue.

3.7. Put the file on the prepared surface.
3.8. Press it with a roller or spatula.
3.9. Coat is with glue, smooth out the surface.

3.10. Varnish the picture in several layers.
3.11. Varnish the entire tray in several layers.

4. Patina

4.1. Take the patina for aging.
4.2. Put on the disposable gloves.
4.3. Work by steps, apply patina on one side at once.

4.4. Remove it almost immediately to get a delicate aging, not mush or mud :)

Here's the result:

5. Varnishing

Since the tray is a piece of kitchen utensils, its inner surface must be durable and water repellent, so:

5.1. Apply the constructional varnish. I have developed the following scheme: 2 layers + sand + 2 layers + sand + 2 layers + sand. Of course, each layer must dry out in its own way.
5.2. Then cover the whole tray with 3 layers of the car lacquer with full drying between layers.
5.3. Finally, cover the item with the soft wax.

Yay, the tray is ready! :)

Get inspired and create!

Yours,
Tatiana Olkhovikova
