Nuno Felting + Patchwork: A Warm Cap with Your Own Hands

Today I want to share with you a simple tutorial on how to felt a cap. The pattern is understood in a snap, and the decor offers to use imagination!

So, you need:

— Merino wool, 40 g

— fabric for decoration

— bulky yarn

Let's start.

Transfer the pattern on foam underlay and cut out a square 40x40cm (it's already with the shrinkage factor). Round the top corners, retreat 4-5 cm at the bottom and draw a line — the lower border of the cap.

Then select cotton or silk patterned cloths.

You need 6-10 different fabrics with bright colorful patterns.

Get voluminous yarn with at least 20% wool and Margilan silk and Merino wool of dark colour.

Put the underlay on the table, a thin film, the template and silk — glue it to the surface with soapy water.

Cover all with film and turn over the sandwich. Fold silk on the other side of the template and cut off all excess.

Lay out the wool. First, a reinforcing layer along the open cut.

The strands should be of medium thickness with an overlap of 3 cm.

Then the first upper layer:

The second row. Overlap of 3 cm.

Leave 2 cm overlapped at the top:

Then lay out a horizontal layer the same way.

Leave 2 cm overlapped on the sides.

Wet all with soapy water.

Cover with film and press, first with hands and then with a towel.

Raise some film, and level the edge:

Turn over the layout on the other side and bend the allowances.

Lay out wool exactly the same way, put film, press and level the edge.

Cut cloth squares and lay them on the blank.

Cotton should be soft and thin.

Put yarn in the grooves.

Cover with film and turn over the blank. Do the same on the other side.

Wet with water, cover with foil and then carefully process with a vibrogrinding machine.

Remove the template and work the side seams.

This seems to be all... Now felt the cap on a roll. Constantly straighten the seams and change the direction. Check yarn after a couple of hundred movements. It's time to take a needle and thread and just sew it.

Monitor the size. Try it on (wet and soaped) from time to time or just make 2-3 cm bigger than your size. Now rinse, wring, pull in all directions, wring in a towel, try on and leave to dry on a piece of cloth.

The cap is a true transformer, watch how one could wear it:

Thank you for attention! Bye-bye! :)
