Sensory DIY Lion Toy for Toddlers

Good day!

I suggest you sewing a toy the idea of which was born after my tutorial for kids. So I come up with Levushka. This toy is ringing, rustling and entertaining for kids from 6 months or even earlier.

The toy is sewn so that a child could not tear it off or eat. Traditionally, the body of a toy is filled with peas, buckwheat, beans, and the head is stuffed with wool. These toys are very similar to antistess triffles. But Levushka is filled with granulate, and the head with polyester batting. Therefore, it can be washed in the machine at 30°C. And while the toy is washed, the bell can be worn on the arm or leg to have fun. The bell is put on elastic. Wich you pleasant sewing!

2. You need:

- red and brown fabric

- yarn for knitting

- cotton

- elastic

- batting

- granulate

- bell

- colour pencil for cheeks

3. Cut out 4 pieces for the head. 4 for the ears, two of them are orange, two are brown. The details are outlined, but not cut.

4. For the mane: brown strips of 10х3 cm - 4 pieces, and 7x3 cm - 4 pieces., orange strips 10х3 cm - 3 pieces, 7x3 cm - 2 pieces. Fabric should be soft enough to be able to turn these narrow pieces outside in. Thick linen and cotton will not do.

5. Cut out a circle D=16 cm and a piece of elastic 14 cm for thу body. A piece of orange fabric for the lion collar with the bell 28х4 cm.

6. Put 2 parts of the head together and stitch the front seam (a more convex arc on the pattern). Do so with the two remaining parts of the head. In the end, get front and back parts of the head. They are equal. To make the seam on the face of the lion even and prevent crumpling when filling the head, straighten and tack on the allowances.

7. Fold and stitch the two halves of the ears of different colours. Turn it outside in and iron. Baste the ears at the bottom to easier stitch them to the parts of the head.

8. Lay all strips together lengthwise. Stitch, turn outside in and iron.

9. It should look like in the photo.

10. Collect the mane. Pin a long orange strip folded in half to the top of the central seam of the head. Then alternate all long strips: orange, brown, orange, etc. and then pin the ears. Pin shorter strips below the ears alternating the colour.

11. Tack some threads of yellow yarn to the top between the strips of the mane.

12. After that, stitch all you've tacked on. And especially where the thin yarn is. Sew the two halves of the head together and trim the excess.

13. Now it's time to turn the blank of the head outside in and fill with batting. And finally, remove the basting threads from the central seam.

14. The eyes and nose can be marked with a simple pen. To make knots unnotices, insert the needle somewhere far away from the embroidery, then pin in it and make a knot. After completing all the details secure the knot again and bring the needle somewhere to an opposite side. Thus, the end is hidden inside the head.

The nose is satin stitched.

15. Hide the thread inside the head again.

16. To sew in a tag, slightly cut a circle for the lion's body and sew in the tag like in a tuck.

17. Now gather the edge of the circle with 5 mm stitches, tighten the thread and leave a hole slightly larger than the hole at the bottom of the head. Fill 2/3 of the "pouch" with granulate.

18. To fix the head, sew it in two threads in a circle with a concealled seam, grabbing the cloth of the head and about three folds of the pouch at once. Make fixing knots in different places.

19. Get a lion like in the picture.

20. Let's make the collar with the bell. Sew a strip and turn it outside in. The open ends are folded inward and ironed.

21. The ends of the band are stitched and the bell is firmly sewn.

22. Then join the ends of the orange strip with a concealled seam. The cub is ready!

The pattern is printed on A4 format.

I hope that everything is clear, but I will also answer all your questions :)

Wish you and your children much fun!

Yours,
Natalia
