Engraving: A Simple DIY for Kids

Never thought this could happen, but my 5-year-old daughter taught me a tutorial yesterday :) She learned this in her painting studio, and I want to share it with you as I was surprised and pleased.

Don't even know how this method of drawing is called, something similar is sold in shops and is called engraving. But you can make it on your own.

So, you need:

- sheet of thick paper (I used for watercolour, but I think you can take any)

- watercolour paints

- black gouache

- a simple wax candle

- toothpick

We made 2 pictures: my daughter and I.

Step 1 was to paint a sheet with watercolour the way you want: use stripes or spots, preferably of different colours.

As just the picture dries up, rub it with the wax candle.. the daughter said to 'zigzag' the entire paper.

Then feel like Malevich and paint the entire sheet black.

Leave to dry for about an hour.

Proceed to the most interesting part: take the toothpick and start to scratch the drawing.

Here is my picture. I draw so-so, but it was so pleasant to scratch... Got a lot of fun.

Thanks my daughter for the DIY, I hope you found something new, I'll be glad to read your comments :)

I think, one can draw some leaves and get a small postcard.

Have much fun with your children! :)
